Trot Nixon and other stuff

So, your starting LF'er goes down with a broken leg that might sideline him for 8 months and you don't attempt to sign Trot Nixon? Seriously?

Anyway, what would Stoney want with a guy with a career OBP of .366?

Instead, we get Shea Hillenbrand. Yeah.

Also from the recent past:

Dallas McPherson could be done for the year. Bummer, I really like D-Mac, probably more than I should, but he can friggin' square-up a baseball. When he hits a ball hard, he does damage. Hope the surgery goes well and he can get a normal life back.

Casey Kotchman seems to be doing better. (Same article)

Kendry Morales' knee is a little funky from a collision while playing winter league ball in the Dominican Republic. (Same article)

I’m pretty happy with the Angels’ moves this off-season. To me, the two biggest things that sunk the Angels in 06 were poor defense and mediocre middle relief. Mathews Jr. puts a Gold Glove caliber player in CF who also has decent speed, power and a great OBP leading off. I also suspect having Scioscia as manager will mean more steal. Hopefully, it will also light a fire under Figgins. Spier and Oliver are significant upgrade in middle relief and should allow Shields to just pitch the 8th. I haven’t worked it out stat wise, but it appeared to me that Shields was clearly a better pitcher when he didn’t have to throw 2 innings in a game. Hillenbrand’s not going to light it up, but he’s consistent and can field his position. Particularly when we face lefty starters, Hillenbrand and Quinlan at the corners should be a pretty good hitting 1st and 3rd combo, and versus righties, Aybar is a decent choice at 3rd and hopefully either Kotchman and/or Morales will step up… All in all not a bad off season, especially since the Angels are already pretty close to being a World Series contender. They’re pretty good and upgraded where they were weak. I think they’ve got a strong shot.

I certainly would have supported a grab at Trot. He's got history, and that's something the Angels don't have a lot of. I mean, they have Torii, but even that Purple drinking guy needs help!
